The Robyn Diaries

Saturday 7th August 2010 - Write a comment

If any of you are still checking back onto this site, which I will be surprised, then you may be happy to know that I have decided to have a fresh blogging start. I have moved over to Blogger as it is easier to gain comments and follow other blogs than through a .co.uk or .com address. I hope to continue in the same vain as I have on this blog, just with a prettier background and new name.

So if your still reading, and would like to continue doing so, then bookmark my new website The Robyn Diaries

Kings of Leon @ Hyde Park

Tuesday 6th July 2010 - Write a comment

Last Wednesday I went to go and see Kings Of Leon in Hyde Park with two of my best friends. While I was super excited to see one of my all time favourite bands I was also a little apprehensions that they would play far too much of the fourth album as they did the last time I saw them. I need not have worried, playing one of my all time favourite songs Taper Jean Girl as their second song with pounding renditions of other classics such as Molly’s Chamber, Fans and Milk. Playing four new songs which still carried on the catchy and commercial aspect I disliked about the fourth album were also quite charming, however the highlight of the set came from the Kings of Leon encore. A beautiful and tear jerking Knocked Up saw the crowd singing back that aching guitar rift throughout the song, and then afterwards while frontman Caleb took a moment to compose himself confessing “We never thought we could feel so special as you guys make us feel. You guys are Kings of Leon”. What an absolute legend.

Support came from The Feature, The Whigs, The Drums (who were brilliant) and The Black Keys who all helped to make a beautiful day in park spent sunbathing and drinking beer with two of my favourite people. Donna, G and myself are driving to Benicassim festival in Spain on Friday via Barcelona and Paris which I am very excited about! However this also means a continued lack of posting for which I apologize,

The Strokes secret show at Dingwalls, Camden

Thursday 10th June 2010 - Write a comment

Good News! The post I originally had on here was picked up by the lovely Nick Fraser who has published it on the Zavvi blog, how super is that? You can see my post here: http://blog.zavvi.com/music/live-music-review-strokes-dingwalls-camden/

Instead of posting the same content twice, below is another version of the same review I did while at work experience at Q Magazine last week. I am waiting to hear back some feedback on this piece of writing and several more from their Features Editor, fingers crossed!

As one of the biggest bands of the last decade, solely responsible for the garage rock revolution with their debut release Is This It back in 2001, Venison aka The Strokes made on hell of a come back with their not-so-secret show in Camden last week.

The scene outside the venue was of frenzied delirium. Those lucky few with gold dust tickets queued as early as three hours before doors, while an almost equal number loitered the cobbled surrounds. With the likes of Zane Lowe, Edith Bowman and Chris Martin in attendance, this was one of those music moments that will go down in the history books.

Taking to the stage for the first time in four years with raucous cheers of “Ven-i-son” ringing in their ears, The Strokes appeared cool and calm amongst the near mass hysteria affront of them.

Opening with a roaring New York City Cops, The Strokes played a tight set of crowd pleasers that often had the leather clad Casablancas struggling to be heard over the mob screaming back his own lyrics.

Classics such as Reptilia, Is This It and Someday saw The Strokes take Dingwalls to fever pitch before leaving the stage after blasting out that jangly monster Last Night to a mass of uninhibited dancing chaos.

A five track encore saw the crowd sprinkled with their own evaporated sweat from the ceiling above, while closing track Take It Or Leave It left it clear that when it comes to The Strokes, London will gladly take everything they have to offer.

ASOS Magazine

Monday 7th June 2010 - 1 Comment

I am not usually one for admiring typography or the layouts of magazines, however I must say that the June issue of ASOS Magazine is absolutely spanking. Something about it is so effortlessly fresh but with a cool edge I didn’t think it could ever muster, much props to whoever designed it. They have also included some sweet bands such as The Big Pink who are amazing, Julian Casablancas and The Temper Trap amongst other favourites. There is the usual dose of fashion, style and of course advertising of the ASOS brand amongst the other content which is totally banging it out this summer. I have to say, one is most impressed!

Adventure

Sunday 6th June 2010 - Write a comment

Before I came to University I took a year out with my best friend in the hope of saving up some money and going traveling, which never happened. At the age of 18 I was rather irresponsible, I still am, and spent any money I earned in enjoying the moment, something else I still do. I did spend a week in Barcelona at Summercase festival and explored one of the loveliest places I have ever been but this doesn’t really count as “traveling”.

Recently a pattern has been occurring in my life, all the people I really care about have left or are leaving for better pastures. Said best friend now lives in Edinburgh, I have lost two love interests to Australia as well as two good friends and another good friend is off to Bournemouth in just over a month. All this moving around has got me thinking about also finding my way somewhere else. When I leave University I plan to save some money and move to New York for a few months, working and applying for internships, one of which I hope will turn into a job. Hello Rolling Stone, NYLON and Teen Vogue – I am coming for you in a few years. However before this I really do think I would love to see some more exotic parts of the world, I’ve been to Europe and some of America already. Wouldn’t you love to get your hair braided in Jamaica, see the Northern Lights of Greenland, pet a kangaroo in Australia, climb a mountain in New Zealand, see the lady boys of Thailand, shake maracas in Mexico, see the lights of Japan, eat noodles in China, see the pyramids of Egypt and experience all those other places so different to grey England?

Where would you like to see? And where have you already been?

Johnny Cash has always been one of the coolest mother fuckers to walk God’s glorious earth and I just wanted to share that simple fact with you. He is also one of my favourite musicians of all time with that die hard rebellious streak I will always admire.

Long time love to you sir,
